The Arts Society, known as NADFAS at the time, started church recording in 1973 because it was realised that few churches had a detailed record of their internal fabrics and furnishings and the artefacts in their possession.  Therefore, they could not identify items that were removed from their church.  The Arts Society has now relinquished responsibility for the task, which has passed to the recently formed Church Recording Society, who will oversee the activities of the various local groups undertaking this work.  Both our predecessor societies recently completed projects that were started before responsibility passed to the Church Recording Society and some of our members are still active in this field, albeit under the auspices of the Church Recording Society.

Apart from the cultural value of the records, they are very much appreciated by the churches themselves, the diocesan authorities and by the police and insurance companies. Copies of the final record for each project are passed to the V & A Art Library, the Church Care Library and the County Records Office.
