2022 is the year of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and on 31 May we will visit her holiday home on The Sandringham Estate.

The estate was purchased for Edward Vll, at that time The Prince of Wales, by his mother Queen Victoria in 1861 and remodelled by the Prince in 1870.

It is steeped in modern Royal history. The Queen’s father George VI and her grandfather George V both died there.

Our visit will include a tour of the House, where there will be a special exhibition to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in the Ballroom.  There will then be a walk around the garden and on to the church of St Mary Magdalene, where members of the Royal Family regularly attend services, especially on Christmas Day.

The Manor, Hemingford Grey, built around 1130, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in Britain. The house includes the patchwork collection sewn by Lucy Boston the author of Green Knowe, the name for The Manor in her series of children's books published 1954-1976. The house is set in 4 acres of grounds.  After lunch, we hope to have time to explore the village including St James church.

In the afternoon, we drive to Kimbolton Castle which has a fascinating history that has seen it develop from a wooden motte and bailey castle in Norman times, into the building it is today, remodelled by Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor in the 18th century. Tudor remains are still visible.  It is famous as the final home of King Henry VIII's first wife, Queen Katharine of Aragon.  The interior is quite sumptuous, boasting an impressive range of State Rooms, with fine painted murals and ceilings by the Venetian artist, Pellegrini.  The Castle is now owned by a school.

Henry Moore (1898-1986) is one of the most significant British artists of the C20; and is most famous for his semi-abstract monumental sculptures. Following last year’s cancellation, we are re-offering this visit to the Henry Moore foundation at Perry Green, Hertfordshire. We start with coffee and the group will be divided into 8s for timed viewings of the house, Hoglands (subject to no restrictions). Each tour will take about 20 – 30 minutes. Thereafter you will have free discovery of his several studios and workshop, the Aisled barn for the tapestries based on his work, the gardens and sculptures.

This is a wonderful chance to spend a stimulating day at this splendid dockyard.  For more than four centuries The Dockyard was one of Britain’s most important centres of warship building and repair. Over 400 warships were built here, allowing the Royal Navy to dominate the seas.

Today it is the world’s most complete dockyard of the Age of Sail.

An initial tour of the dockyard in our coach sets the scene.  Thereafter you explore the historic warships, the RNLI lifeboat collection, submarines and others.  After lunch, a ‘Women of the Dockyard’ walking tour has been arranged.

 Organised by TAS Sudbury is this visit to Elton Hall, Cambridgeshire, home of the Proby family since 1595.  Successive generations have embellished both the house and collection, which contains many Old Masters and fine examples of English portraiture. 

We will also visit Elton Church, which has some lovely stained glass by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones and Longthorpe Tower in Peterborough, which has the most complete and important sets of 14th-century domestic wall paintings in northern Europe.

The Albert Memorial is one of the great sculptural achievements of the Victorian era. With stunning images, you will be taken on a tour of the Memorial from top to bottom, revealing details of the art work that the human eye could never see on a real-life tour. The sculpture groups, representing the Continents and the Industrial Arts, the statues representing the Sciences and the Virtues, and the 169 figures of the Parnassus frieze, are examined close up. The complications and strife involved in the building and completion of the Memorial are discussed as well as how it embodies the ideals and aspirations of the Victorian Age. This is an immensely ‘rich’ monument which is very difficult to study from the ground and the virtual tour gives us a chance to understand it without the need for binoculars. Barbara Askew is an historian, a lecturer for the Arts Society and the only Blue Badge guide who conducts tours of the Albert Memorial.

The Hanseatic port of Kings Lynn is full of beautiful buildings. Our guided, circular tour will explore the prominent buildings and take in the old harbour, customs house and many churches.

Our guided town walk with Dr Paul Richards will include the Minster, St Nicholas Chapel with its recently restored Willis Organ and exquisit 15th Century carved angels as well as many other buildings of interest.

Clifton House is a fascinating merchant's house with a huge cellar and high tower from which the merchant could see his ships arriving into the harbour. It has been restored by the owner, Dr Simon Thurley, formely head of English Heritage, who will show us round.

Join us in Ipswich for what will be East Anglia's once in a lifetime exhibition. Discover the tale behind the lovers in Auguste Rodin's life-size marble sculpture The Kiss and the work of literature that inspired it. This monumental artwork, on loan from the Tate, is a significant piece in the history of sculpture.

Several of Rodin's sculptures on loan from the Tate and East Anglian museums and galleries will be displayed in this major exhibition, including portrait sculptures of French novelist Honoré de Balzac and two more of Rodin's sculptures inspired by movement and dance.

Humans and Other Animals is a major new exhibition of Suffolk-born artist Elisabeth Frink (1930-1993).

Featuring over 130 works by the artist, this is the largest showing of Frink’s work in 25 years, exploring Frink’s enduring preoccupation with human and animal forms and the symbiotic relationship between them. It provides new perspectives on the key themes found in her work, from responses to the Second World War and the Cold War climate of fear, to the role of man as both aggressor and victim.

Humans and Other Animals examines Frink’s radical and bohemian beginnings in 1950s London and trace the evolution of her practice over all four decades of her career, as well as juxtaposing her work with that of contemporary artists, ancient art and other modern masters including Rodin, Picasso and Bourgeois.

Experience the decade of decadence at Eltham Palace as you are transported back to the 1930s (just in time for cocktail hour!).  Created for millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld, Eltham Palace is part showpiece of Art Deco design and 1930s cutting-edge technology, and part medieval royal palace. If time allows you can explore some of the 19 acres of award-winning gardens  (gold winner of London in Bloom Awards 2017).

After lunch, we will travel to Red House, the only house commissioned, created and lived in by William Morris, founder of the Arts & Crafts movement.

The rooms at Red House give a unique view of William Morris’ earliest designs and decorative schemes.  Its secrets are slowly being revealed, conservation work in 2013 uncovered an unknown Pre-Raphaelite wall painting and a very early Morris repeating floral pattern.

Waddesdon Manor was built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in 1874 to house his art collection and provide a means for him to continue his tradition of hospitality and entertainment for which he was well known.

This visit, organised by The Arts Society South Suffolk, provides members with the opportunity to step back in time and enjoy some unusual treats of food and wine and also to wander in the Victorian style gardens with flamboyantly coloured parterre and an exotic bird Aviary.

Compton Verney is home to six diverse collections of nationally and internationally significant art from around the world. In addition there will be an Exhibition entitled ‘Creating the Countryside’ with works by John Constable, George Stubbs, Samuel Palmer, Stanley Spencer, as well as contemporary artists such as Matt Collishaw, Sigrid Holmwood, Ingrid Pollard and others.

First we will visit All Saints’ Church, Cambridge. The Church was built in the 1860s to the plans of the famous 19th century architect G.F. Bodley.   The stained-glass windows were designed by leading Arts & Crafts artists, including William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, and Ford Madox Brown.   In addition, almost every surface of the walls is covered in painted, stencilled or gilded decoration.   It is most unusual and quite breathtaking.

The second part of our visit is to Island Hall, Godmanchester, Cambridge.     Built in the late 1740s, this is one of the finest early Georgian houses in the region.    It was a favourite of Octavia Hill, founder of the National Trust

The interior has a very fine carved oak staircase, and the drawing room and dining room have handsome carved wood panelling original to the house.  

The gardens are enclosed with 18th century brick walls and mature trees and are connected by a Chinese-style bridge to the island in the River Great Ouse, from which the house takes its name.

Set on the edge of Hampstead Heath and surrounded by tranquil landscaped gardens, Kenwood is one of London's hidden gems.

Kenwood House has recently undergone a £6m. restoration which has restored many of the original Robert Adam features. Originally a brick-built, rather plain building, Adam had transformed it by 1779 into something described by him as rather gay, magnificent, beautiful and picturesque. Kenwood House contains key works of art by Rembrandt, Reynolds, Vermeer and Gainsborough.

Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, dates from 1270. There are fine collections of paintings, furniture and tapestries. The gardens extend to over 30 acres, including a walled Italian garden.

The coach will leave Sudbury long stay car park at 0830 am before arriving at Hever around mid-day. The coach will leave Hever at 4.30 pm for the return to Sudbury.

William Morris was a designer, writer and social reformer. He was an important member of the Arts & Crafts movement. The Gallery holds the most comprehensive collection of objects relating to Morris's life and work together with important aspects of the Arts & Crafts movement. The Vestry House Museum is housed within Walthamstow Village. The house was built in 1730 and shows local history through a variety of displays and paintings of local scenes. The village has many old buildings and illustrates how life may have been lived in the past.

Woburn Abbey (pronounced Woe-burn, or until c.1960 "Woob'n"), near Woburn, Bedfordshire, England, is a country house, the seat of the Duke of Bedford and the location of the Woburn Safari Park. Woburn Abbey, comprising Woburn Park and its buildings, was originally founded as a Cistercian abbey in 1145.Taken from its monastic residents by Henry VIII and given to John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford, in 1547, it became the seat of the Russell family and the Dukes of Bedford. The Abbey was largely rebuilt starting in 1744 by the architects Henry Flitcroft and Henry Holland for the 4th Duke. Anna Maria, the wife of the 7th Duke, originated the afternoon tea ritual in 19th-century England. In April 1786 John Adams (the future second President of the United States on tour with Thomas Jefferson—who would serve as his vice president before becoming President himself) visited Woburn Abbey and other notable houses in the area. After visiting them he wrote in his diary "Stowe, Hagley, and Blenheim, are superb; Woburn, Caversham, and the Leasowes are beautiful. Wotton is both great and elegant, though neglected".However in his diary he was also damning about the means used to finance the large estates, and he did not think that the embellishments to the landscape, made by the owners of the great country houses, would suit the more rugged American countryside.
