This major new exhibition, which opens at the Sainsbury Centre in September, will feature over 150 works drawn from collections in the UK and internationally.  It will consider how ancient Egypt has shaped our cultural imagination. From antiquity, when the Great Pyramid was revered as a wonder of the ancient world, to the Cleopatra of Shakespeare’s stage, this ground-breaking exhibition explores this ongoing engagement with ancient Egypt and charts its many forms across centuries of art and design. The exhibition examines how the iconic motifs and visual styles of Egypt have been re-imagined and re-invented over time – revealing a history closely entwined with conquest and colonial politics.

2022 is the year of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and on 31 May we will visit her holiday home on The Sandringham Estate.

The estate was purchased for Edward Vll, at that time The Prince of Wales, by his mother Queen Victoria in 1861 and remodelled by the Prince in 1870.

It is steeped in modern Royal history. The Queen’s father George VI and her grandfather George V both died there.

Our visit will include a tour of the House, where there will be a special exhibition to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in the Ballroom.  There will then be a walk around the garden and on to the church of St Mary Magdalene, where members of the Royal Family regularly attend services, especially on Christmas Day.

The Manor, Hemingford Grey, built around 1130, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in Britain. The house includes the patchwork collection sewn by Lucy Boston the author of Green Knowe, the name for The Manor in her series of children's books published 1954-1976. The house is set in 4 acres of grounds.  After lunch, we hope to have time to explore the village including St James church.

In the afternoon, we drive to Kimbolton Castle which has a fascinating history that has seen it develop from a wooden motte and bailey castle in Norman times, into the building it is today, remodelled by Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor in the 18th century. Tudor remains are still visible.  It is famous as the final home of King Henry VIII's first wife, Queen Katharine of Aragon.  The interior is quite sumptuous, boasting an impressive range of State Rooms, with fine painted murals and ceilings by the Venetian artist, Pellegrini.  The Castle is now owned by a school.

On arrival in London, we will visit Tate Modern for the morning.  Plans of the building, routes and art work locations will be provided, together with details of the busier and quieter rooms, to enable you to plan your morning.  

We will then be taken by coach to Borough Market where we can enjoy the fabulous food stalls and have lunch at one of the many pubs: Globe (home of Bridget Jones's flat), Wheatsheaf or Market Porter, or at one of the cafes, including the Courtyard at Southwark Cathedral. 

With Andrew Davies retiring, our usual London walking tour has been taken on by Diane Burstein, who you may recall from the excellent Zoom guided tour that she gave last May - Artists of London: from Hogarth to Hirst.  After lunch Diane, together with another expert colleague (if our numbers require it), is going to take us round the lesser known (and less crowded) area of Bermondsey which is fast changing from an industrial area to a very fashionable one with museums, restaurants and apartments.  We will see the site of an ancient abbey, the old Leather market, atmospheric streets, gardens and much within sight of the river.

Henry Moore (1898-1986) is one of the most significant British artists of the C20; and is most famous for his semi-abstract monumental sculptures. Following last year’s cancellation, this visit to the Henry Moore foundation at Perry Green, Hertfordshire has been rebooked. We start with coffee and the group will be divided into 8s for timed viewings of the house, Hoglands (subject to no restrictions). Each tour will take about 20 – 30 minutes. Thereafter you will have free time to discover several of Moore's studios and workshop, the Aisled barn for the tapestries based on his work, the gardens and sculptures.

This is a wonderful chance to spend a stimulating day at this splendid dockyard.  For more than four centuries The Dockyard was one of Britain’s most important centres of warship building and repair. Over 400 warships were built here, allowing the Royal Navy to dominate the seas.

Today it is the world’s most complete dockyard of the Age of Sail.

An initial tour of the dockyard in our coach sets the scene.  Thereafter you explore the historic warships; buildings housing the RNLI lifeboat collection; Steam, Steel and Submarines; Victorian ropery and much else.  After lunch, a Women of the Dockyard  walking tour has been arranged.

A relatively short journey for this visit to Elton Hall, the extraordinary, romantic, part-gothic historic house in Cambridgeshire, home of the Proby family since 1595, where we will have a guided tour of the house leaving time for lunch and to explore the beautiful, recently restored gardens.  We will also stop at Elton Church with stained glass by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones and then at Longthorpe Tower, Peterborough, which  has the most complete and important sets of 14th-century domestic wall paintings in northern Europe.  Tickets: £44.

Come and explore the changed face of this historically heavily industrialised river. Newcastle once held the monopoly of the coal trade and later was one of the first cities to be lit by electric light. The death of the coal trade and shipbuilding hit the city hard but it has fought back.

Since the vandalism of the 1960s, much of the historic town has been protected and the waterfront restored as a public space with cultural buildings to match.

This virtual walk concentrates on the riverside, examining its buildings old and new and its magnificent bridges.

Laura Rhodes is a Blue Badge Tourist Guide for Yorkshire and North East England. She came to the area 25 years ago and never left.  Laura will be talking directly to us and will be able to answer our questions.

What turns an area into a creative quarter, and how have artists made their mark on the development of the capital? All will be revealed during this illustrated talk.

The Albert Memorial is one of the great sculptural achievements of the Victorian era.  With stunning images, you will be taken on a tour of the Memorial from top to bottom, revealing details of the art work that the human eye could never see on a real-life tour.  The sculpture groups, representing the Continents and the Industrial Arts, the statues representing the Sciences and the Virtues, and the 169 figures of the Parnassus frieze, are examined close up.

The complications and strife involved in the building and completion of the Memorial are discussed as well as how it embodies the ideals and aspirations of the Victorian Age.

This is an immensely ‘rich’ monument which is very difficult to study from the ground and the virtual tour gives us a chance to understand it without the need for binoculars.

This Virtual Tour has been organised by our sister society, South Suffolk.

London Blue Badge guide, David Drury, will be taking us on a virtual tour of Hidden London and exposing us to an assortment of lesser known treasures.  Looking beyond the Tower of London and the Houses of Parliament, he will reveal some of London’s best kept secrets.  We will travel from the Leytonstone mosaics of Alfred Hitchcock to the Crystal Palace dinosaurs.  We will dine in Elizabethan grandeur at Middle Temple Hall; seek calm and tranquillity at the Neasden Hindu temple;  then marvel at the engineering wonders of the Cathedral of Sewage and the ‘Cistern Chapel’.  Lastly, we will savour the Victorian splendour of Leadenhall Market and the oasis of the Barbican Conservatory.

Numbers of members have said how much they are missing their usual day visits around the country so, to give you a flavour of these from the comfort of your own home, a trial run of a ‘virtual’ tour via Zoom Meeting has been arranged for Monday 8 February.  

Blue Badge guide, Barbara Askew, will talk to us directly and take us to the grounds of Windsor Castle, showing us places not often accessible to the public, and then on to the towns of Windsor and Eton getting us  close up to things we may not normally see.  She will also stop at various points to take any questions from us.

The tour will take about an hour, costs £5 per household and has the bonus of being free of traffic, crowds, bad weather and difficult terrain.   If this tour proves popular, other tours will be organised for the future.

History and nature collide for this visit to produce a stunning British attraction: Kew Gardens and Kew Palace showcase the very best of British design and horticulture.

Kew Palace is the smallest of all the royal palaces.  It was originally built as a fashionable mansion for wealthy London silk merchant, Samuel Fortrey in 1631.

George II (r 1727-60) and Queen Caroline were first attracted to little Kew, thinking it a perfect lodging for their three eldest daughters.  After them, several generations of Georgian royalty used Kew and nearby Richmond Lodge as weekend retreats from an intensely public life in town.

Kew reflects the intimate personal and domestic life of Georgian kings and queens for much of the 18th century. Today the interior of this tiny, atmospheric palace tells the powerful story of George III, his mental illness and the members of his family who lived and died there.

The gardens are well worth a visit - you could spend a few hours walking around or, take the tram ride around (it takes 40 minutes) and gives you a great overview of the gardens and you can hop on and off where you want.

The Hanseatic port of Kings Lynn is full of beautiful buildings. Our guided, circular tour will explore the prominent buildings and take in the old harbour, customs house and many churches.

Our guided town walk with Dr Paul Richards will include the Minster, St Nicholas Chapel (with its recently restored Willis Organ) and exquisit 15th Century carved angels, as well as many other buildings of interest.

Clifton House is a fascinating merchant's house with a huge cellar and high tower from which the merchant could see his ships arriving into the harbour. It has been restored by the owner, Dr Simon Thurley, formely head of English Heritage, who will show us round. ?

This year’s Andrew Davies led trip in London features Kenwood House and an exploration of Hampstead Village. The morning walk in and around Kenwood is about 300 yards and the afternoon downhill walk through Hampstead Village will be about 850 yards. 

Kenwood House (also known as the Iveagh Bequest) is a former stately home on the northern boundary of Hampstead Heath.

The house was originally constructed in the 17th century and served as a residence for the Earls of Mansfield through the 18th and 19th centuries. Part of the estate was bought by the Guinness family in the early 20th century, and the whole property and grounds came under ownership of the London County Council and was open to the public by the end of the 1920s.

Kenwood House is an archetypal Adam masterpiece with its fine Georgian interiors, refurbished in 2013 with magnificent views over the 112 acres of park created by Humphry Repton.  The house contains superb paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Reynolds, Constable and Gainsborough.

After lunch the coach will drop us off at the top of Hampstead village and Andrew will then guide us through the fashionable village with its quaint alleyways and perfectly preserved Georgian buildings long favoured by academics and artists.  He will also take us to St John's churchyard where John Constable is buried.

An opportunity to visit and have a guided tour of Somerleyton Hall, one of the premier stately homes in East Anglia. Somerleyton is an early Victorian mansion built upon the foundations of a 13th century house. Purchased in 1842 by businessman Sir Morton Peto and it is to him that we owe the house we can see today at Somerleyton. The Crossley family, of carpet making fame, currently own this historic house and contents.

After time exploring the lovely gardens, we will travel on to Horning to board a Mississippi paddle boat  for a trip along the River Bure and out to Ranworth Broad.

The rooms at Red House give a unique view of William Morris’ earliest designs and decorative schemes.  Its secrets are slowly being revealed, conservation work in 2013 uncovered an unknown Pre-Raphaelite wall painting and a very early Morris repeating floral pattern.

Waddesdon Manor was built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in 1874 to house his art collection and provide a means for him to continue his tradition of hospitality and entertainment for which he was well known.

By 1091 King Harold’s manor house had become the summer palace of the bishops of Norwich.  Rebuilt towards the end of the 14th Century, it has been owned by many well connected individuals including the Boleyn family.  Indeed Anne Boleyn was born in the house in 1501.  Its sumptuous interior contains many wonderful carvings, art works (including some by Gainsborough) and the gardens are a joy.

The bluebells in the woodland walk should be in full bloom when we visit and the walled garden development project well advanced.

The perfect setting for an Edwardian country retreat overlooking the rolling Surrey Hills and referred to by the Queen Mother on her honeymoon at Polesden Lacey as  “... a delicious house”

This Regency house was extensively remodelled in 1906 by Margaret Greville, the well-known Edwardian hostess. Her collection of fine paintings, furniture, porcelain and silver is displayed in the reception rooms and galleries, as it was at the time of her celebrated house parties.

The gardens offer something for every season, including climbing roses at their best in June, a herbaceous border that is currently being restored to pre-war glories and a winter garden bursting with yellow aconites.

The wider estate, 1,400 acres in all, is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and provides excellent walking through ancient woodland or over rolling hills, with four waymarked trails to try.  Much of the estate is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Explore in detail an historic part of London and its legal links when Andrew Davies takes us on a walk around the Inner and Middle Temple and Lincoln's Inn.  He'll take us to see all the nooks, crannies, architecture and gardens and as usual, he will show us some of the quirky things to be found along the way together with significant places in history.  The day will also include a guided tour inside the Royal Courts of Justice.

Built for the Prince Regent, later King George IV, this magnificent building is remarkable for its exotic appearance, both inside and out.  Conceived as a monument to pleasure and replete with Chinese and Indian influences, it is a reflection of the monarch’s personality and taste.  The palace is a complete work of art that conjures up a fantasy world.  It is furnished with exquisite French, English and Chinese export furniture and objects, and adorned with gilded dragons, carved palm trees and imitation bamboo staircases.  A collection of Regency political cartoons casts a satirical eye on the Prince Regent’s world.

First we will visit All Saints Church, Cambridge.  The church was built in the 1860s to the plans of the famous 19th century architect G F Bodley.  The stained glass windows were designed by leading Arts & Crafts artists, including William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown.  In addition, almost every surface of the walls is covered in painted, stencilled or gilded decoration.  It is most unusual and quite breathtaking.

The second part of our visit is to Island Hall, Godmanchester, Cambridge.  Built in the late 1740s, this is one of the finest early Georgian houses in the region.  It was a favourite of Octavia Hill, founder of the National Trust.  The interior has a very fine carved oak staircase and the drawing and dining rooms have handsome carved wood panelling original to the house

The gardens are enclosed with 18th century brick walls and mature trees and are connected by a Chinese style bridge to the island in the River Great Ouse, from which the house takes its name.

England’s oldest public art gallery, Dulwich Picture Gallery was opened in 1817 and was designed by Sir John Soane.  The exhibition spaces were arranged as a series of interlinked rooms illuminated naturally through skylights – a concept that had an enduring influence on art gallery design. 

The gallery‘s superb collection has works by Rembrandt, Canaletto, Poussin, Gainsborough, Watteau, Claude, Murillo and Raphael, to name just a few.  The building also houses the mausoleum to French collector/dealer Noel  Desenfans and Swiss painter Sir Francis Bourgeois, original founders of the collection. 

Anyone enjoying Andrew Graham-Dixon’s Art of Scandinavia currently on BBC4, will be pleased to be able to visit the temporary exhibition at Dulwich: Painting Norway, featuring work of Nikolai Astrup.

The Wallace Collection displays works of art collected by the first four Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace, son of the 4th Marquess. New spaces and facilities have recently been added, including the re-opening of the Grand Hall.

Set on the edge of Hampstead Heath and surrounded by tranquil gardens designed by Humphry Repton, Kenwood is one of London's hidden gems.

Kenwood House has recently undergone a £6m programme of work which has restored many of the original Robert Adam features.  Originally a brick-built, rather plain building, by 1779 Adam had transformed it into something described by him as "rather gay, magnificent, beautiful and picturesque".  Kenwood House contains key works of art by Rembrandt, Reynolds, Vermeer and Gainsborough.

Hever Castle in Kent began as a country house, built in the 13th century and was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn.  In 1903 it was acquired and restored by American millionaire William Waldorf Astor who added the Italian Garden to display his collection of statuary.

The castle offers three floors containing antique furniture, Anne Boleyn's books of hours, a large collection of Tudor paintings and tapestries. The remains of the original country house timbers can still be seen within the stone walls of the fortification and Hever has the oldest working portcullis in England.

The award winning gardens, including over 30 acres of formal gardens, is considered to be one of the most beautiful in England. The grounds of the castle include a yew maze, lake, grottoes, cascades and fountains as well as over 4,000 rose bushes, a rhododendron walk, herb garden and topiary.
